Swami Nisreyasnanda, a disciple of Swami Shivananda (One of the Direct Disciples of Sri Ramakrishna, afterwards became President of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission), was preaching the message of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda and Vedanta in the African countries since 1960s. Under his auspices several centres grew up in several places in Zambia (the then Northern Rhodesia) and in other countries. One such Centre was established in Lusaka, Zambia.
Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, Lusaka, Zambia submitted its own constitution to the office of the Registrar of Societies on 10th January, 1974. The Centre was duly Registered under the Societies Act on 14th January, 1974 under Registration Number ORS / 102 / 67 / 35.
The land was allotted to the Centre by Govt of Zambia on 99 years Lease with effect from 19.05. 1986
Swami Nisreyasnanda was the first Spiritual Director of RKVC, Lusaka.
Nisreyasanandaji passed away in November, 1991 in India.
On 11th July, 2001 Affiliation was granted to the Centre by the Mission.
This Affiliation was subsequently withdrawn by Mission authorities vide letter of the General Secretary of Ramakrishna Math and Mission dated 25th July, 2002.
There was a court battle regarding the proper functioning of the Centre following the Constitution of the Centre made at the time of inception.
After the Verdict delivered on 31st March, 2016 by the Honourable High Court of Zambia, it was again affiliated By Ramakrishna Mission, India.
Immediately Sw. Sumanasanandaji (Durban, South Africa) had taken the charge of the Centre in addition to his own Centre.
Then Sw. Shantimayanandaji reached Lusaka and took the charge of this Centre on August, 2016. He left the Centre for India in December, 2016.
Sw. Sumanasanandaji (Durban) again took the charge of the Centre in addition to his own Centre.
Swami Devapriyananda has taken the charge of this Centre as the Spiritual Director on 28 May, 2017.
